The Banco de Moçambique (BM) was established in 1975 by Decree No. 2/75 of May 17, in light of the commitments undertaken in the Lusaka Accords in 1974. The central bank inherited the assets and values of the Department of Mozambique from the Banco Nacional Ultramarino.

April 22, 1978

In light of the Presidential Decrees no. 15/78 and 16/78, Sérgio Vieira and Prakash Ratilal, are appointed Governor and Deputy-Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, respectively.

September 7, 1974 

The Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and the Government of Portugal sign the Lusaka Accords regarding the Independence of Mozambique. It had been laid down that a central bank would be established in the country. 

January 9, 1991

Law No. 1/91 confers on the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique powers to determine the characteristics and face value of Metical banknotes and coins and repeals paragraph five of article 10 of Decree No. 2/75 of May 17.

November 6, 2000

The Government and 8 donors signed an agreement regarding the Joint Macrofinancial Aid Program, consisting of a direct financial support mechanism to the State Budget, making foreign aid funds available through a common foreign account held by the Banco de Moçambique. The central bank channels the exchange value to the Treasury.

June 16, 2006

Launch of the New Metical. The Governor of the Banco de Moçambique steers the public event in light of the official launch of the new Metical banknotes and coins. 

January 27 to 29, 2010

The XXXIV Advisory Board meeting of the Banco de Moçambique took place under the theme “The Role of Infrastructure in Promoting Economic Development and Accommodating the Financial Sector and its Services”.

At the end of the 2014 financial, the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, announced the celebrations of the 40-year anniversary of the BM and the 35-year anniversary of the national currency, the Metical, in Maputo. The Governor added that “such celebrations would include cultural, sports, and scientific and historic events, among others.”

Rogério Lucas Zandamela is appointed Governor of the Banco de Moçambique by Presidential Decree No. 50/2016.
