LUANDA HOSTS FIRST MEETING OF GOVERNORS OF THE NETWORK OF CENTRAL BANKS OF PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING COUNTRIES

The first Meeting of Governors of the Network of Central Banks of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (BCPLP Network) was held in Luanda on 4 November 2026. During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding formally establishing the Network was signed, creating a permanent framework for dialogue and cooperation among its members.

At the meeting, the Governors underscored the importance of the initiative in an international environment marked by increasingly complex economic, financial and technological challenges. They acknowledged the value of knowledge sharing, the exchange of experiences and closer cooperation among institutions that share a common language and heritage.

The programme for the Network’s first presidency, held by Banco de Portugal, was also presented. Its priorities include strengthening dialogue among member countries and developing technical cooperation initiatives in areas of common interest.

The Governors also approved the mandates of the working groups and the Economic Policy Committee. Working groups were established in the areas of payments, financial literacy and inclusion, crisis management and resolution, external sector statistics, as well as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. These groups will serve as specialised technical forums, enabling staff from the various central banks to exchange views and experiences openly and constructively, thereby maximising the benefits of the Network.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on the international economic environment and the main challenges currently facing the economies and central banks of the participating countries. Following the discussion, the Governors agreed to schedule future webinars on topics including microcredit and the use of artificial intelligence in banking supervision.

The Governors expressed their appreciation to the National Bank of Angola for hosting the meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to the development of the BCPLP Network.

The next Meeting of Governors will be held in April 2027 on the margins of the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.
