BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE PRESENTS THE ECONOMIC OUTLOOK AND INFLATION FORECASTS AT THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF MOZAMBIQUE - QUELIMANE BRANCH

This Tuesday morning (6), the Banco de Moçambique presented the Economic Outlook and Inflation Forecasts Report (CEPI) to the academic community at the Catholic University of Mozambique - Quelimane Branch, and the students were quite engaged in the session. The institution was represented by the Deputy Pedagogical Director of the Social Sciences and Policies Faculty, Gaudência Alves and managers from other university bodies.

On behalf of the Banco de Moçambique stood Advisor Umaia Mahomed, which placed disclosing the monetary policy decisions at the session's backdrop, alongside Director Pinho Ribeiro, who presented the Report, the branch's substitute director, Lucrécia Manhonha, the Assistant Technician of the Communications Office (GCI) and Economic Research Department and Quelimane branch (FIQ) technicians.

For his part, Pinho Ribeiro explained that the monetary policy decisions taken by the Banco de Moçambique follow from the assessment of the domestic and international landscape, and mainly aim to promote price stability, and the Interbank Money Market Rate (MIMO) is its main instrument to achieve this goal.

Following a detailed explanation of the monetary policy transmission method and domestic and international drivers assessed by the Monetary Policy Committee, in its session on March 29 this year, Ribeiro made known the decisions taken by the body and publicly announced on the same date.

In the lively discussion session that followed the presentation, the students asked several questions, highlighting the mechanism for fixing the MIMO rate and its impact on the economy and the citizen, the coordination between monetary and fiscal policies and structural issues relating to the role of the Banco de Moçambique in promoting the agricultural sector and reducing the country's external dependence.

At the end of the session, Alves thanked the Banco de Moçambique for the initiative, calling the event an important experience for the academic community.

Next Friday (9), the Banco de Moçambique will present the CEPI report at the Universidade de Púnguè, in Chimoio.
