Today, March 17, the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique (BM), Rogério Zandamela, and the Chairman of the Xai-Xai City Council, Emídio Xavier, inaugurated the Metical Square in Xai-Xai city.

The initiative is part of BM's commitment to set up Metical Squares in all provincial capitals, in order to promote the country's greatest symbol of economic sovereignty, the Metical, and ensure that current and future generations engage in the preservation of our history.

During his speech at the event, the BM Governor stated that with the inauguration of the country's third Metical Square, “we wish to promote our currency, the Metical, one of the most important symbols of our sovereignty and conquest, so I would like to reiterate our call for its appreciation and conservation”.

Rogério Zandamela went on to state that “this Metical Square should enhance the landscape of Xai-Xai city, and provide its citizens and visitors with a space of recreation and leisure par excellence, boasting benches, poles and lighting lamps, which make for one of the most expressive business cards of the city”

“The central bank remains committed to the adoption of policies that contribute to the appreciation of the Metical and citizen purchasing power, and undertaking economic literacy and education actions indispensable for personal finance management and understanding of the main concepts concerning the BM's mandate” – the Governor added.

For his part, the Xai-Xai Mayor said that the Metical Square is of inestimable value, not only to the promotion and appreciation of the Metical, but also to the improvement of the city's landscape.

Emídio Xavier pointed out that, despite Mozambique's countless challenges, Governor Zandamela has managed to uphold the country's economic stability. During his speech, the visibly moved Mayor offered the keys to the city of Xai-Xai to the governor, as decided by the city council.

The event was attended by BM Board Members, Benedita Guimino and Silvina de Abreu, the Xai-Xai city administrator, Carlos Buchili, managers, assistant managers and staff members of the Bank, as well as some officers of the city council.
