Thursday, 18 September 2025

This Thursday morning (18), the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, Rogério Zandamela, and the Mayor of Nampula City, Luís Giquira, signed a memorandum of understanding to build Metical Square in the municipality. The initiative is part of the central bank’s nationwide efforts to promote appreciation, preservation, and greater visibility of the Metical in everyday life, as a living symbol of national identity and pride.
Governor Zandamela noted that the agreement reflects both institutional commitment and a shared determination to revitalize urban spaces, guided by principles of inclusion, sustainability, and resilience in the face of growing challenges posed by urbanization and climate change.
He expressed optimism about the project’s benefits, emphasizing that its implementation calls for close attention, technical rigor, and determination to deliver a solid, safe, and lasting infrastructure capable of withstanding the effects of climate change in the region.
“We expect Metical Square to add beauty to Nampula City, offering residents a unique space for leisure and community interaction, while also becoming one of the calling cards of this beautiful city, whose urban landscape is marked by distinctive forms and identity,” he said.
Mayor Giquira welcomed the central bank’s initiative in the region, stressing that the construction of the monument will serve as a reminder for present and future generations to recognize and preserve the symbols of national history and identity.
He added that, beyond its aesthetic value, the Square will become one of the city’s main attractions for visitors.
