Today (15), the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, Rogério Lucas Zandamela, announced the circulation of a new series of Metical banknotes and coins, as of June 16, 2024.

On May 17, Zandamela met with commercial banks to disclose the circulation of the “2024 series”, and stressed that it will circulate alongside the series of banknotes and coins issued as of July 1, 2006.

“Today marks the onset of disclosing the characteristics of the new series of banknotes and coins, which, in essence, feature elements about the history, fauna, education, marine resources and agriculture of our country,” said the Governor.  

Rogério Zandamela said that the “2024 series” benefited from the latest technological advances in banknote printing and coin minting.   In fact, the new Metical banknotes and coins are equipped with modern security features and integrate components that facilitate and improve the identification of the various denominations by visually impaired persons.

Zandamela highlighted that it is our collective responsibility to ensure the conservation of Metical banknotes and coins, despite the new series’ improvements.
